STEMx
Math
The math branch of STEMx aims, at a basic level, to extend access to interesting math to members of the Castilleja and surrounding communities. Among teenagers, math can take on a reputation for being simply rote learning or bland and dry, and we hope to directly challenge that idea, ideally inspiring participants to take a genuine interest in math. Activities and talks will provide insights into the mathematical world, both practical and theoretical, that offer a different take than a textbook or class lecture might. Additionally, hand in hand with the overarching goals of STEMx, the math branch hopes to provide girls specifically with engaging exposure to math. Given the gender ratios in math fields like academia, for instance-- less than 30% of graduate students in math are women, and only 12% of tenured faculty-- math as a field stands to gain significantly from future contributions of female mathematicians.
Activities will include:
Activities will include:
- hands-on exploration of the math present in areas like food and music
- speakers on their professional study or use of mathematical concepts outside the typical high school course
- collaborative problem-solving activities, from art to proofs
